Most people searching for a pet sitter in Chelmsford end up comparing two options: booking through an app such as Rover, or hiring an independent local sitter directly. I’m obviously the second kind, so I’ll be upfront about that. This post sets out the differences as fairly as I can, including when an app might suit you better.
How booking through Rover works
Rover is a marketplace. Individual sitters create profiles and set their own prices, and you search, message and book through the platform. According to Rover’s help centre, pet owners pay a booking fee of 11%, finalized at checkout, and sitters pay Rover a 20% service fee on each booking.
What an app does well:
- Choice. You can compare many sitters, prices and availability in one place.
- Reviews and messaging are built into the platform.
- Last-minute options. With many sitters listed, you may find someone at short notice.
How booking a local independent sitter works
You contact the sitter directly, meet them, and agree the care and price with them. With my business, that looks like this:
- A free meet & greet in your home before any care is booked.
- The same person every visit. I’m a one-person business; the person you meet is the person who comes.
- One client at a time. I care for one client’s pets at a time during a visit or stay.
- My own insurance and training. I’m insured through PCI and Pet First Aid and CPR certified.
- Written policies for cancellations, payment, emergencies and weather.
- No platform booking fee. The price we agree is the price you pay.
Side by side
| App (e.g. Rover) | Local independent sitter | |
|---|---|---|
| Choice of sitters | Large | One person (or a small team) |
| Fees | Owner booking fee of 11% at checkout | Agreed directly; no platform fee |
| Who turns up | Depends on the sitter you book | The same person every time |
| Meeting first | Varies by sitter; ask for one | Required free meet & greet |
| Insurance and training | Varies by sitter; ask each one | Ask directly (I’m insured through PCI and Pet First Aid certified) |
| Short-notice availability | Often better | Limited; regular clients come first |
When an app might suit you better
- You need someone tonight and local sitters are booked.
- You live outside a local sitter’s area. I cover Chelmsford, North Chelmsford and parts of Westford and Billerica; see the service area.
- You want to compare many price points quickly.
When a local sitter is usually the better fit
- Your pet is anxious, elderly or on medication and does best with one familiar person.
- You want to meet the sitter in your home before handing over a key.
- You plan to book regularly, such as weekday walks, and want the same walker every time.
Questions to ask whichever you choose
- Will the same person come every visit?
- Are you insured, and can I see proof?
- Are you trained in pet first aid?
- How long will each visit or overnight actually be?
- Will you be caring for other people’s pets at the same time?
- What fees will I pay on top of the rate?
- What happens if my pet needs a vet while I’m away?
There’s a longer list in questions to ask a pet sitter before you book. If you’d like to meet me, read some client reviews or book a free meet & greet.
