Chelmsford has more good dog walking than people expect: a paved rail trail through the middle of town, a network of town forests and conservation land, and a state park right on the Carlisle line. Here are the places worth knowing, with the rules that apply to each.
First, the rule that covers most of town: Chelmsford’s conservation land regulations say dogs must be leashed at all times. Please pick up after your dog too.
1. Bruce Freeman Rail Trail
The paved Bruce Freeman Rail Trail is the easiest walk in town. Phase 1 runs 6.8 miles from the Lowell end near Cross Point, through Chelmsford, to the junction of Route 27 and Route 225 in Westford, and it opened in 2009.
- Surface: paved, flat and wide, good for older dogs and wet days.
- Parking in Chelmsford listed by the Friends of the trail includes the Stop & Shop lot (299 Chelmsford St.), Chelmsford Center for the Arts (1A North Rd.), the Chelmsford Center Artwalk at Cushing Place, Byam School (25 Maple Rd., outside school hours) and Heart Pond (2 Pond St.).
- Rules: the trail asks walkers to keep pets on a short leash and remove droppings.
- Watch for: bikes and runners. A short leash keeps everyone happy.

2. Russell Mill Pond and Town Forest
At 105 Mill Road, the town forest covers 132 acres (7 of them under water), with oak woods, pine stands and 3,000 feet of frontage on the east bank of Russell Mill Pond. The main access is behind the soccer fields on Mill Road, with other entrances on Noble Drive.
- Good for: longer woodland walks with plenty to sniff.
- Watch for: the trails are popular with mountain bikers, so keep your dog close on bends.

3. Thanksgiving Forest Reservation
A 45-acre town forest at 40 Janet Road in South Chelmsford, on the west bank of Russell Mill Pond. It has mixed woods, ledge outcrops and big boulders, and its trails connect to Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle. There’s also access from Gary Road.

4. Great Brook Farm State Park (Carlisle)
Just over the town line, Great Brook Farm is a state park run by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). DCR lists it as one of the parks where off-leash dogs are allowed on trails that are not in the farm or pond area, as long as dogs are under voice control, stay in sight and come when called. Dogs must be leashed in parking areas, and elsewhere in DCR parks leashes can be no longer than ten feet.

5. Warren H. Manning State Forest (Billerica)
In northern Billerica off Chelmsford Road (Route 129), this state forest has a 1.35-mile loop with parking, open sunrise to sunset. The town’s guide to the forest says dogs must be on a leash at all times.
More Chelmsford conservation land
Chelmsford has many smaller reservations, including Lime Quarry Reservation, the George B.B. Wright Reservation, Crooked Spring Reservation and Deep Brook Reservation. Trail maps are on the Town of Chelmsford website. The same rule applies everywhere: leash on, and pick up after your dog.
A few safety tips
- Check the weather. Summer pavement can burn paws, and winter ice is hard on older joints. See winter pet safety tips and summer heat safety.
- Carry water on longer woodland walks.
- Check for ticks after walks through long grass and woods, and ask your vet about tick prevention.
- Keep ID and licence tags on. Chelmsford dogs must be licensed each year (Town of Chelmsford).
Need a midday walk while you’re at work?
On my client walks, every dog stays on a leash, the walk is matched to your dog’s age and energy, and you get a walk report afterwards. Walks start at $20; see dog walking in Chelmsford or the service area.
